Cement vs. concrete: what is the difference?
Most people who call us for "cement" work actually want concrete, and the two words get used interchangeably every day. There is a real difference, and it takes about thirty seconds to explain.
Cement is an ingredient. Concrete is the finished material. Cement, usually Portland cement, is the fine gray powder that acts as the glue. On its own it is not what you pour for a driveway or a patio. Concrete is what you actually get: cement mixed with sand and gravel (the aggregate) and water, which cures into the hard, durable surface you park on and walk across. So when someone asks for a cement driveway, a cement patio, or a cement slab, what they are describing is a concrete driveway, patio, or slab that is made with cement.
