What a concrete slab or pad actually is
A concrete slab is a flat, reinforced layer of concrete poured over a prepared base to carry weight and shed water. A pad is the same idea at a smaller footprint, sized for a specific piece of equipment or structure. Whether it is a garage floor or a hot tub pad, the slab is only as good as what sits under it. In the Central Valley that base work matters more than most people expect, because our subgrade is often expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks in the summer heat. Get the base wrong and the slab cracks, settles, or heaves no matter how good the concrete mix was.
New slab work is different from fixing an old one. If you already have a cracked or sunken slab, that is concrete slab repair or concrete leveling, a separate scope. This page is about pouring new. How we pour a slab, step by step
Every slab follows the same core sequence. The details change with the use, but the order does not.
- Layout and excavation. We stake the footprint, strip topsoil and organic material, and dig to the depth the finished thickness and base require.
- Subgrade compaction. The native soil gets graded and compacted so it will not settle unevenly under load. On clay-heavy lots this step earns its keep.
- Aggregate base. We bring in crushed rock, spread it, grade it for drainage, and compact it in lifts. This gives the slab a stable, free-draining cushion.
- Vapor barrier. Where the slab will be inside or under cover, a poly vapor barrier goes down to keep ground moisture from wicking up through the concrete.
- Forms. We set and brace forms to the right elevation and slope so the finished slab drains where it should.
- Reinforcement. Rebar on chairs, wire mesh, or fiber mesh depending on the load. Steel keeps cracks tight and ties the slab together.
- Pour and finish. We place the concrete, screed it flat, float and trowel it to the finish you want, and tool the edges. Most residential slabs go in as a monolithic pour so the slab and its thickened edges are one continuous piece.
- Control joints and cure. We cut control joints so the slab cracks along planned lines instead of randomly, then protect and cure it. Curing is where Valley heat comes in, and we manage it deliberately.
What we pour slabs and pads for
Slab and pad projects cover a wide range around Stockton:
- Garage slabs. A new detached garage or a slab for an existing structure, poured flat and jointed to take vehicle weight.
- Shed pads. A clean, level base for a storage shed or prefab building so it sits square and stays dry.
- ADU slabs. Accessory dwelling units are common in Stockton right now. An ADU slab is load-bearing and usually needs permitted plans, and we coordinate that with your designer or engineer.
- Workshop and shop floors. Thicker, reinforced floors built to take tools, benches, and rolling loads.
- Equipment and AC pads. Small, level pads for HVAC condensers, generators, and mechanical units.
- Hot tub and spa pads. A full spa full of water is heavy, so these get engineered thickness and reinforcement.
- RV pads. Heavy, thick slabs sized to park a motorhome or trailer without cracking.
Thickness and reinforcement by use
Thickness is the single biggest driver of how a slab performs. A 4-inch slab is typical for garage floors, shed pads, patios, and light foot or vehicle traffic. Once you are parking heavy vehicles, storing equipment, or carrying a structure, 6-inch is the common step up, and heavy commercial or RV loads may go thicker with engineered steel. Reinforcement scales the same way. Fiber mesh mixed into the concrete controls fine shrinkage cracking, wire mesh adds a light structural grid, and rebar on a designed grid is what carries real load. What drives the cost
We give free itemized estimates so you see where the money goes, but a few factors move the number on every slab. Square footage and thickness set the baseline. Base prep is next, and a lot that needs heavy excavation, extra aggregate base, or fixing bad soil costs more than a flat, stable pad. Reinforcement level, access for the truck and pump, site slope and drainage work, and the finish you choose all add up. A simple 4-inch shed pad on a clean lot is on the low end. A thick, heavily reinforced RV pad or a permitted ADU slab with engineered detailing sits much higher. Rather than quote a blind per-foot rate, we walk the site, measure, and price the actual work. Timeline and curing
Most residential slabs are a multi-day job. Base prep, forming, and reinforcement usually run a day or two, the pour is a single day, and then the slab cures. Concrete is strong enough to walk on within a day or so and to take normal load in several days, but it keeps gaining strength for weeks. We manage curing tightly through Stockton summers, because concrete that dries out too fast in the heat loses strength and is more prone to surface cracking. Keeping the slab moist and protected while it cures is not optional here, it is part of doing the job right.

The most expensive slab mistakes almost always trace back to the base. Skimp on compaction or aggregate and the strongest concrete in the world will still crack and settle over expansive clay.
